A Heart for Helping: How One Young Neighbor Inspired His Community

  • June 21, 2026
  • Valeria Novoa

At a very young age, Jason Jr. began asking how he could help others. Whether he saw a charity commercial on television or a fundraising letter in the mail, he was curious about people in need and eager to make a difference.

His father remembers those early moments clearly.

“It started very young, maybe around 3 or 4 years old,” he shared. “He would notice different commercials and ask how we could help. He was insistent that we do something.”

That desire to help eventually led Jason Jr. to take part in Feeding Westchester’s Souper Bowl food drive. What started as a goal to collect 100 cans of soup quickly grew into something much bigger.

With support from family, friends, neighbors, and community members, Jason Jr. collected more than 525 cans of soup to help neighbors facing hunger.

His family rallied behind the effort by sending emails and text messages, creating a Buffalo Bills-themed flyer, and encouraging Jason Jr. to share his message himself. He even went door-to-door in his neighborhood, explaining why helping others mattered to him and asking neighbors to contribute.

As donations began to come in, Jason Jr. watched the collection grow with excitement and pride.

“He’s very visual, so once he started to actually see the soup cans coming in, that was really rewarding for him,” his father said. “He was able to connect his actions to a positive result.”

For his father, though, the most meaningful moments were not the final numbers. They were the everyday conversations that showed how deeply the experience mattered to his son.

“It was hearing him talk to his grandmother about what he was doing, or hearing him tell his teacher about it with so much pride,” he said. “He was very passionate about being able to do something for people he had never even met.”

What began as a food drive became something more: a lesson in compassion, service, and leadership.

Jason Jr.’s family believes helping others is an important part of raising a well-rounded child. Through the Souper Bowl food drive and other charitable efforts, including a diaper drive and a Valentine’s Day card initiative for nursing home residents, they hope to show him that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful impact.

“I think it’s teaching him that even the smallest acts of charity, kindness, and awareness about other people’s needs can make a difference,” his father shared.

Today, Jason Jr. is already thinking about what he wants to do next and how he can help even more people. Inspired by his dream of one day serving in the military, he hopes future charitable efforts will include support for veterans.

His story is a reminder that age is never a barrier to making a difference. When families, neighbors, and communities come together around a shared purpose, small acts of kindness can grow into something powerful.

Through one young boy’s determination to help others, hundreds of meals were collected, people across the community were inspired, and neighbors facing hunger received support.

“You really never know how much of a positive impact you can make,” his father said. “But you can certainly start.”
