Vinay Rao’s connection to Feeding Westchester began with a simple act of generosity.
When his son was turning seven, Vinay and his family decided to celebrate in a different way. Instead of asking for gifts, they encouraged friends and family to make donations to Feeding Westchester. At the time, he was looking for a local organization where he could see the impact of his contribution firsthand.
That decision sparked a relationship that would grow from donor to volunteer, board member, and eventually Chair of the Board of Directors.
“I wanted to know where my money was going and what impact it was making,” Vinay shared.
As he became more involved, Vinay began volunteering at Feeding Westchester’s mobile distributions. There, he saw firsthand the connection between community support and the neighbors it reaches.
“The money I donated was used to buy the food that I’m now helping distribute in the mobile pantry line,” he said.
For Vinay, those experiences transformed hunger from a statistic into something deeply personal. He met families, seniors, and individuals facing difficult circumstances, many of whom never expected they would need support.
Those moments reinforced an important truth: hunger can affect anyone.
While Westchester is often perceived as an affluent county, many neighbors continue to struggle with rising costs, unexpected emergencies, and financial challenges that make it difficult to put food on the table. Through his volunteer work, Vinay saw how Feeding Westchester serves as a critical source of support for people across the county.
As his commitment to the organization grew, so did his leadership. Vinay joined Feeding Westchester’s Board of Directors and now serves as Chair of the Board of Directors, helping guide the organization’s vision and future growth.
In his role, he sees the board as more than a governing body. Board members bring expertise from a wide range of industries and backgrounds, helping strengthen the organization’s ability to respond to community needs and advance its mission.
“We have people on the board who specialize in marketing, development, HR, law, and other areas,” Vinay explained. “That expertise allows leadership and management to get counsel in areas where they may not have deep internal expertise.”
Over the years, Vinay has witnessed Feeding Westchester grow significantly, not only in the amount of food distributed and funds raised, but also in its role throughout the county.
“It’s gone from providing a service to becoming a linchpin of the broader support system for our community,” he said.
Today, Feeding Westchester works alongside a network of partners, volunteers, donors, and advocates to address hunger throughout Westchester County. More than 41% of households in the county are at risk of hunger, a reminder that this challenge is both local and widespread.
Through his volunteer experiences, he has seen people from all walks of life seek support during difficult times. Whether facing job loss, unexpected expenses, or other life challenges, many neighbors find themselves needing assistance when they least expect it.
Those experiences have strengthened his belief that community support matters.
When people volunteer, donate, advocate, or simply raise awareness, they become part of a larger effort to ensure no one in Westchester goes hungry.
Looking ahead, Vinay is hopeful about what is possible when communities come together. While Feeding Westchester provides critical food assistance today, he also envisions a future where families have access to the resources, opportunities, and support systems needed to build a better tomorrow.
For Vinay, that future starts with community.
“It’s going to take the entire community to uplift all of our neighbors,” he said.
His story is a reminder that creating a hunger-free Westchester is not the responsibility of one organization alone. It requires neighbors, businesses, volunteers, donors, and community leaders working together toward a shared goal.
When people come together to support one another, meaningful change becomes possible. Every donation, volunteer hour, and act of advocacy helps strengthen the network of support that neighbors rely on. Together, we are Feeding Westchester.
