“We are the community’s college.”
That belief sits at the heart of how Dr. Belinda Miles leads SUNY Westchester Community College. For her, supporting students means seeing the whole person — not just the student in the classroom, but the neighbor balancing work, family, transportation, childcare, and the rising cost of daily life.
She knows that for some students, hunger is part of that reality too.
“It would be tremendously difficult for our students to focus on their studies… if they’re hungry,” she shared.
That is why support beyond the classroom matters so deeply at WCC. It is why the college’s food pantry is such an important resource for students, and why its partnership with Feeding Westchester has been so meaningful.
Dr. Miles described Feeding Westchester as “an extraordinary organization” and spoke about the importance of working together to meet needs that no one institution can address alone. WCC brings its expertise in education and student support. Feeding Westchester brings deep experience in providing nutritious food to neighbors across the county. Together, that partnership helps expand what is possible for students.

For Dr. Miles, access to food is not separate from student success. It is part of what makes success possible.
She believes students are best able to learn, grow, and build their futures when they have the support they need to stay focused and keep moving forward. And her hope for students goes far beyond graduation. She wants them to leave WCC with knowledge, curiosity, and a sense of purpose that stays with them for life.
That hope was especially clear when she reflected on students who had participated in an alternative spring break trip to Selma, Alabama. Listening to them speak about what they had learned, she was moved by their compassion and openness.
“The testimonials of our students were so moving,” she said. “They were so empathetic.”
For Dr. Miles, moments like that are a reminder of what students can become when they are truly supported: leaders, learners, and neighbors who carry both knowledge and heart into the world around them.
And that is why support matters now.
Because students cannot wait.
Because hunger cannot wait.
And because sometimes the support a student needs looks like more than education alone. Sometimes it looks like a community coming together to make sure they have the nourishment, care, and encouragement they need to keep going.
