As turkey season wrapped up in Westchester, the need in our community was still sharply rising. SNAP benefit cuts and the recent government shutdown left many neighbors struggling to get food on the table. One of them was a disabled senior in Yonkers who had spent weeks trying to get help.
By the time he was referred to Feeding Westchester, he had called multiple offices, waited on hold, repeated his story countless times — and still had no food in his home. His frustration was understandable. Many neighbors facing sudden SNAP cuts find themselves navigating a complicated, overwhelming system at the exact moment when they’re most vulnerable.
That Friday afternoon, our team stepped in.

Giselle, part of our Feeding Westchester family, called him right away. She listened to his story, took down his address, and prepared an emergency food bag with the support of our Volunteer Services team. Minutes later, she was on the road to deliver it to his home.
When he opened the door, something unexpected happened.
He paused, stunned that someone had come directly to him with food. Then he stepped forward and hugged her tightly — a moment of relief after weeks of worry. He shared how difficult it had been to get help and how much it meant to have food finally arrive at his door.
For him, that knock on the door was more than a delivery. It was a reminder that he wasn’t forgotten.
For us, it was a powerful example of why this work matters. Even in the busiest seasons, every action we take sends the same message to our neighbors: you deserve to eat, you deserve to be cared for, and you deserve to be met with dignity.
Feeding Westchester is here to ensure no one in our county has to struggle alone. And thanks to team members like Giselle — and the support of our volunteers, partners, and donors — we can keep showing up for neighbors who need us most.
Due to weather conditions, our office will be closed on Monday, February 23. We have coordinated with our partners and made the necessary arrangements.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support of our work across Westchester.
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our offices are closed today, January 19. Food donation drop-off remains open, and your support helps ensure neighbors across Westchester have access to fresh, healthy food.
