During Truck Driver Appreciation Week, Feeding Westchester is celebrating the 11 drivers who help keep nutritious food moving throughout Westchester County — and who bring care, consistency and respect to every stop along the way.
Every day, Feeding Westchester’s drivers connect our distribution center with community partners across the county, helping ensure food reaches neighborhoods where it is needed most.
Their work requires skill, reliability and a deep understanding of the responsibility they carry. But for our drivers, the job is about more than what is inside the truck. It is also about the people waiting at the other end of the route.
Peter Pozo, who has been part of the Feeding Westchester team for 13 years, has seen that firsthand.
“We sometimes don’t know what they’re going through as they approach our line to get food,” Peter said. “We’re not in their shoes.”
That perspective reflects something our entire driver team brings to the work: every delivery is an opportunity to serve our neighbors with dignity.
“Sometimes you see people standing there, and they might put a good face to a bad time,” Peter said. “So we need to be kind. We need to be empathetic.”
Across Westchester, our drivers are a vital link in a much larger network. They work alongside our staff and 175 community partners to help move millions of pounds of nutritious food each year to food pantries, soup kitchens, schools, shelters and other programs throughout the county.
In Feeding Westchester’s latest annual impact reporting, 21.3 million pounds of food — equivalent to 17.7 million meals — moved through that network. Behind those numbers are thousands of routes, deliveries, early mornings, careful loading and unloading, and countless interactions with community partners and neighbors.
And through it all, our 11 drivers help make sure the work moves forward safely, efficiently and with care.
“I hope that people know that we’re there to support them, not just for food, but for any of the services that we provide,” Peter said. “We’re there to serve them with respect and dignity.”
That commitment is shared across the team.
Whether they are delivering fresh produce, picking up recovered food from a retail partner or bringing groceries to a community distribution, Feeding Westchester’s drivers help connect resources with people throughout Westchester every day.
For Peter, 13 years on the road have reinforced a simple idea about service.
“We not only need to make a difference, but we actually need to be the difference.”
This Truck Driver Appreciation Week, we thank all 11 members of Feeding Westchester’s driver team for being part of that difference — for the miles they travel, the relationships they build and the care they bring to every delivery.
